Hi, anyone out there know about serious adductor longus tears? I have been to physio for 6 months and no light at the end of the tunnel. ultrasound say I have torn the adductor away from the groin/pelvis bone. I still have a serious lump where the muscle has bunched, I love my sports but can't even swim without pain. I'm not an elite sportswoman but need to sort this serious injury out (which happened playing soccer!)
many thanks to any solutions - even the physio is stumped and I am considered a rare case!

Sometimes the adductor longus muscle can rupture and basically do a self-release which actually gets rid of adductor pain. However, if part of the muscle rips off the bone, the tendon still attached is under serious stress and causes pain.

For more info, read (or get your physio or doctor to read), this paper:

What can be done to fix this? Also, what tests are used to determine whether this has happened? In my case I have adductor pain (which was caused by a car accident 2 years ago). Although in the original MRI only an acetabular fracture and sacral fracture were determined. My theory is that during my accident my adductor was torn and then healed too short (as I recovered with a pillow under my knees at all times- shortening the adductor) and now a doctor thinks that adductor tenotomy will fix me. But I am wondering maybe if the above mentioned could have happened to me and maybe the muscle has ripped and the tendon is the thing in pain??? Please HELP!!

Hello Cathy Barnes,
I know exactly what your saying. I have had the same injurt for 13 months.

What you need to do is get x-rays. Flamingo view, which will tell you whether or not you have oestitis pubis. If you have this ( A seperation of the pubic bone at the middle, basically a stress fracture of the front pubic bone) you will need to have complete rest until it has fully healed. Often this can take 6 12 months. I believe this is exactly what you have, it is quite comon amongst soccer players. Once it is healed you will need to get an M.R.I, to see exactly what part of the muscle is damaged. I know it sounds a lot, but no doctor will look at you unless you have done all the research.

I saw many doctors and most said it will take years and ther were not that interested, because I was not an elite athlete. Finally I met a doctor who was/is a runner of some note and he sent me of to a surgeon. I saw the surgeon showed all my stuff and an ADDUCTOR TENOTOMY 3 days later. TOTAL SUCCESS. They cut your adductor and strtch it and reattach it. All my symptoms disappeared. I am seeing the doc again in two days for check up. Back i full training 4 weeks after op.
Good luck, michael.

Hi, I finally had an operation to repair what we thought was a torn adductor longus last week. I has torn it some time ago and had never fully recovered (pain when running and walking, sudden changes of direction etc). X-rays showed a calcifcation mass on the sight of the tear. The surgeon planned on removing the mass and partially releasing the adductor. When he opened me up he found that both my short adductors were attached only by scar tissue, both must have torn when I injured myself. He tacked one to the magnus and left the other. He says I should recover eventually. I hope this helps some, hang in there.

Hello Cathy,

I had completely torn my adductor longus off of the bone 19 months ago playing rugby. I had surgery last Friday, December 23rd, almost 19 months after the initial injury and had it completely reattached, 80% of the normal length of the muscle. I have already started physical therapy and it is looking optimistic.

I was sitting on my couch in a kneeling position a few weeks ago reading a book. I wasn't moving around or anything. I felt a slight pull and then had a dull ache a few days later where the pull was. After doing some research, I feel that the pull is an adductor longus injury.

Is this possible? I wasn't moving around or anything.... just sitting in one spot (again, kneeling on the couch, curled up).

Who could I go to verify if I have torn my AL muscle? Should I get an xray or MRI? What type of tests can verify it.

I don't have any pain, just an annoying ache. Any response would be appreciated.

I developed my pain in an unusual manner. Woke up one morning and rolled over and got pain on the right side. 6 months later samething, except on the left hand side. I havent done any sporting activity for around 14 months.
You guys are lucky, I have had xrays, ct scans, ultrasounds and MRI's and nothing has showed.
Stumped on what to do or who to see apart from physio.

I have had this injury for 3 years, nothing comes up on x rays or ct. I have seen pt, chiropractor and other specialists. I am better now than 3 years ago but I still can't run, walking 1 mile aggravates it, riding my bike aggravates it. I do not know what to do, I am at the end of my rope. I am only 31 and am seeing all my dreams fly out the window. My sartorius, groin and glutes bother me everyday. Does anyone have any suggestions

Thanks Mike

Good Day, Mike
Where are you living? If you live anywhere near Sydney Dr John Garvey is your man. He and Gilmore (lives in England and coined the phrase Gilmore's Groin) are the world's leaders in groins. Also a good guy in Melbourne and Canberra. Check out www.coolrunning.com.au and type in 'osteitis pubis' . There is bucket loads of information.
If you are looking for a great physio who works hand in hand with Garvey is Amanda Turner at Mosman. She specialises in groins. Only 1 of 2 that I know of in Australia.
I understand frustration. I saw Olympic surgeons who didn't give a toss because my name was not Monners. After 3 years of pain John booked me in after initial consultation and 2 days later I was operated on. I had an Adductor Tenotomy. (Day surgery).Ran pbs within 8 months. Was actually running within two weeks after virtually being crippled to the point I couldn't even pull my undies on properly for 3 years. Last year had GROIN RECONSTRUCTION, John only Dr in Australia that does it. I had a torn Conjoint Tendon, sports hernia and a trapped orbturator nerve. No other Dr would touch me with a ten foot pole.
