On Saturday I sustained a side strain, or "Grunt Muscle" from bowling in cricket. Very painful! Any advise or suggestions on rehab and recovery would be greatly appreciated as our only physio in town has just moved on. Pretty keen to be bowling in finals, Cheers Stixnic

Really depends on what muscle you have torn and the degree..... is it an oblique strain, intercostal, lat strain?

'Side strain' is normally a fairly broad term to describe any muscle injury obtained whilst bowling.... they can vary from a few weeks to long terms stints on the sidelines (if players injure or fracture ribs which can happen).

A common sign on the degree of injury and the rehab process is whether coughing hurts and then exercises like a side sit up or normal situp cause any pain or discomfort. Physio treatment is necessary for a full diagnosis and to guide you through the rehab..

Thanks for reply, the pain originates at the ribs and it now 16 days since injury and I still feel a sharp pain in ribs when I cough or sneeze although it has eased. I can bat OK but am unsure whether to tough it out and try to bowl this weekend. Thanks again for input, no physio in Alex currently.

You may even need 6 weeks till your 100%, so go easy and be patient.
