MUTTIAH Muralitharan is set to miss Sri Lanka's coming Test series in New Zealand due to slow recovery of his injured shoulder, team physiotherapist C.J. Clarke said today.

Muralitharan, out of Test cricket since last August, was expected to make a comeback during the tour postponed from January due to the Asian tsunamis that ravaged Sri Lanka on December 26.

But the 32-year-old, who underwent corrective surgery last month, was unlikely to be fit in time to play the two Tests in Napier (April 4-8) and Wellington (April 11-15), Clarke said.

"Murali's shoulder is still stiff," the physiotherapist said. "He will start rehabilitation and bowling again around March 17 but the NZ tour is unrealistic."

The off-spinner claimed a world record 532 victims in 91 Tests before the injury, but was surpassed by Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne who has grabbed 566 wickets in 120 Tests.

The Sri Lankan, who is getting married to an Indian girl later this month, has also been contracted to play county cricket for Lancashire during the first half of the English summer.

But Clarke declined to confirm if Muralitharan would be able to play in England from the last week of April.

"His suitability for England depends on the rehabilitation period," Clarke said.

Muralitharan played his first international match since August when he turned out for an Asian XI against a World XI in the tsunami charity one-dayer at Melbourne in Australia in January.

But doctors ordered a minor surgery on the right shoulder when the pain resurfaced after the match.

Sri Lanka are expected to name the NZ-bound squad on Tuesday.

Will still miss the NZ tour. Hoping for a return for Sri Lanka against the West Indies in July.

SRI Lanka spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan has been given the all clear to resume bowling and start the second stage of his rehabilitation from shoulder injury.

Muralitharan will travel to England on Monday to start pre-season training with Lancashire and hopes to regain full fitness by the end of April and possibly play a one-day match against Glamorgan on April 17.

"The shoulder is feeling great and although it feels stiff in the morning it is now completely pain free when I bowl," Muralitharan said.

Sri Lanka Cricket's Melbourne-based surgeon Dr David Young declared himself satisfied with the shoulder after a consultation earlier this week. Muralitharan underwent surgery on it in August and February.

The off-spinner, desperate to return after the longest injury layoff of his career, immediately returned to the nets at his club Tamil Union and now bowls between 20-40 deliveries per day to gradually build-up strength in the shoulder.

Sri Lanka are due to tour India immediately after their rearranged two-Test tour to New Zealand but Muralitharan will not be ready for a full international return in time for the five-match one-day series.

Muralitharan will stay with Lancashire for the first half of the season, returning to Sri Lanka in time for a two-Test series with West Indies starting on July 15.
