I have had a chronic calf muscle injury for a number of years. After resting for a while it feels good but whenever I attempt to run on a hard surface it flairs up again. My phsio has advised that there is a lot of scar tissue that has built up over time and we have tried stretching, lasonil ointment and some other treatments over the years with little success. Appreciate any other suggestions.

I've had a serious tear of my lower calf muscles twice and both times had the doctor put me on crutches for 2 to 4 weeks, followed by at least 2 months of very little pressure on the calf muscles. All together, it tooks about 3 months to get the muscles working at about 90% capacity, with 6 months for a full recovery.
Here are some web sites that explain the problem better, with recommendations for a full recovery:
Google Image search on the medical term for my muscle tear: gastrocnemius muscle strain

get your running style analysed
the guys at www.ssop.com.au have a gait lab where they video you running and see where your problem is
if you have had physio for a while and it's not working ...go see a better physio
