Great practical summary on stretching in this month's Physician Sportsmedicine (free full text) by the stretching guru Ian Shrier.

Basically says that regular stretching helps performance in most people with poor flexibility, but that stretching before a major event is probably not good for performance.
WRT injury prevention, stretching before an event doesn't prevent injury but regular stretching might.
