Interesting bit from Mike Sheahan's article on Paul Williams of the Swans today (rare condition indeed in a young bloke):
......
During the off-season, he found a solution to the foot problem that hampered him for the bulk of 2004.
Basically, it is calcification in arteries in the calf, a problem that restricted blood flow to the foot.
"The foot virtually has no blood when I start exercising, but the specialist said if I just keep training and working through the pain, I'll form these collateral arteries then I'll eventually get enough blood to the foot," he said.
"It got to the stage where it was pretty excruciating and I couldn't even take a step without feeling real pain. Like an extremely bruised foot. Every time I'd strike the ground, it was like I was running on a stump.
"The specialist said my arteries in the left side (of the calf) are about 1.4mm and the ones on the right side are only 0.3mm so there was calcification in my arteries.
"For 12 weeks last year, I didn't even train during the week; didn't drop a bead of sweat. I just sat in the stand, had a coffee, watched the boys; it was very frustrating."
