Can anyone help by suggesting how to search for info on my wife's problem. The doctors are pretty much useless. Can anyone name the disease/problem etc?

Here's the situation.

At the top of the spine where it enters the skull she regularly has huge pain, just where the 'yellow line terminates in the pic.

She has described the sensation as;

1. An electrical storm like when you go to a science museum and the have a glass ball with a 'charged' rod in the center & its constantly discharging 'lightning' out to the glass wall of the ball.

2. The other description is similar to the 'burning sensation' one gets from prolong contact with such as in a freezer and you are handling ice. Its really painful and feels like you flesh is 'burning'.

3. Like some approached from behind and jammed a hot coal into the base of your skull.

So there you go. Doctors look at the X-Rays & Ultra sounds & shrug their shoulders. Nothing unusual to see. Surely its gotta "have a name".

Any suggestions or fellow sufferers out there?

Hi there,

I would suggest your wife sees a good sports physician. Whereabouts are you based ? They have a much better understanding of joint related problems.

Hi there,
Your wife, assuming that alll the medical tests are negative, may be suffering from suboccipital tension. This is tightness at the base of the skull which is very common, especially in office workers who assume a "forward head carriage" from looking at computers screens etc. Tightness of the occipital muscles can affect the small blood vessels nerves in the area, which can give rise to many symptoms depending on severity. If this is the case, then a massage therapist, Chiro, Phsio or Osteopath can help. Let us know how she goes.

Agree -coudl be an alignment issue. Need to see a chiro or osteopath. How is her posture?
