View Full Version : knee pain remains after arthroscopy

Hello,

The title is a bit misleading. I had the medial plica removed from my right knee in December, because it seemed to be interfering with the knee joint motion. Since then, most of the "crackling" noise has gone away, as well as some pain. However, I still experience pain when the knee is bent at certain angles and pressure applied. This happens when squatting, and also when performing leg extensions on exercise machines. It seems to be about a 30-40 degree bending of the knee that causes the pain. I'm guessing that at this angle there is something rubbing together inside the joint. A MRI prior to the arthroscopy indicated a "1.3 cm defect in the articular cartilage", which I assumed was due to the plica rubbing the cartilage away. I'm 30 years old now, and have been active in stop-and-go sports (basketball, soccer, baseball -- yes, I'm American =p) since I was ~6 years old. In fact, the doctor's advice was to stop participating in these types of sports, but it's in my blood and I just can't. Both knees tend to crack when coming out of a squatting position, but no pain in the left knee so far. The pain in the post-op knee is on the same side as where the plica was removed, and is probably due to the 1.3 cm defect. Any thoughts as to how to treat this? I've heard of an injection of some sort of protein that can provide more lubrication in the joint.

Thanks,
Tom

P.S. I've been experiencing these phenomena in my knees for ~2 years, and it is hard for me to believe that my body is falling apart so suddenly.
