We'll take the credit for flagging (before the game) that Port had lost a home final a year earlier to a team whose best player was ruled out by hamstring strain in the lead-up!:
The Sydney Swans suffered a nightmare ending to round 22 with star forward Michael O'Loughlin forced from the field with an injured hamstring. The injury has now been confirmed as a strain on a MRI scan, with O'Loughlin ruled out until week 3 of the finals. The Brisbane Lions rested Martin Pike in round 22 and Craig McRae last weekend with hamstring problems in order to have them fit during the finals. Although it is possible for players to take the field a week after a hamstring strain, they often play poorly and have a high risk of worsening the injury. The hamstring muscle is injured during over-striding, and the way to 'carry' an injury is to under-stride on the injured leg, which unfortunately sacrifices speed. History repeated itself with the Swans emulating Collingwood's performance against Port Adelaide in the first week of the finals last year, in which they sensibly left out Nathan Buckley who had a hamstring injury, and won the game. Read (in .pdf format) a further scientific paper on why muscle strains so often recur, statistics on the recurrence of hamstring strains, the biomechanics of muscle strains and how to prevent hamstring strains.
