View Full Version : Rotated ankle injury

I was playing soccer and kicked the ball (with my right foot) at the same time as another player that resulted in my right foot twisting around the axis of the tibia and fibia. My ankle swelled on the inside below the bone bulge for a couple of days and has only just come back to normal size 1.5 weeks after the injury. At the time it didn't seem that serious and I kept playing as there was only a little kniggle rather than pain.
I wonder if there is a straping technique to counter this rotation for the next time I play. I believe that the stirup method is mostly for rolled ankles.
Any ideas?

Most ankle strapping is designed to resist rotation and inversion/eversion but to allow full flexion and extension. Stirrups are the basic technique which do this.
It is a good sign that you were able to keep playing after the original injury, suggesting you didn't damage the syndesmosis. However, as you kept running the (presumably grade 1 deltoid ligament sprain) injury probably led to more swelling. In this scenario, anti-inflammatory tablets may help, as would strapping on return

Thankyou for your speedy reply and advice.
A further query:
I intend to play today unstrapped to see how it goes. If it swells up again that is obviously a sign that the injury has not completely healed?
How should the swelling be dealt with eg: cold compress for .5 hour then off for 10 minutes repeated for a few hours?

I wouldn't worry too much about swelling after the game, although you are correct. With ankles, if you can change direction without pain then the injury is pretty much OK structurally.
If you waited until every injury was completely 100% recovered before going back you would be out a long time.
