With the Swans still reeling from injuries to key players in the lead up to the finals, their injury crisis took a bizarre turn on Monday night with coach Paul Roos rupturing an Achilles tendon playing basketball. The Achilles tendon is commonly injured in sport, and ruptures can occur in active players. In the NRL this year, Souths player Fili Lolohea suffered an Achilles rupture, whilst in the AFL, Wayne Campbell of Richmond ruptured his Achilles jumping up to celebrate a teammate's goal. Non-rupture tendon disorders are also common, with Steven King of Geelong missing the last five rounds of the season. The best treatment for Achilles tendinopathy is eccentric strengthening exercises. Fortunately Achilles tendon ruptures can be surgically repaired which will get Roos both back into the coaches box this weekend, and back to the social basketball court next season.
