hi im just wondering if anyone could help me with an injury i have had fro the last 3 years that i cant seem to get rid of. its located on the tendon on the right hamstring that links the knee, its the tendon on the inside of the leg. it feels like the tendon and hamstring are taut but the flexibility and strength of the hamstring are both good. all physical tests i have had done by physios have shown that the hamstring seems fine. i have a minor disc bulge in between my L1 and s5 but its not impinging on any nerves while i also have upper back pain by the right shoulder but i think that is just postural. id like to know if anyone has had a similar injury or have some infirmation that might help me. thanks :confused

Diagnosis can be difficult for back of the knee problems. Good news is that if it is on the medial (inside) part of the knee then the tendons there aren't that critical. You have 4 of them, so even if one ruptured you could still (eventually) run and sprint.

I would get a doctor to try a cortisone injection, initially to the hamstring tendon itself. If that doesn't work it might be worth trying one into the low back at the level of your disc lesion, on the side of the hamstring pain, just in case nerve impingement is causing a lot of the problem.

Ive struggled with tendon injuries in the hammy too. infact nearly for 4 or 5 years of soccer. It has come to the pint where retirement looks likely. Frequently I played soccer (under pressure from coaches) whilst the tendon wasn't healed. I suffered great pain and lack of movement (speed etc..) and now I cant seem to get the thing right.

I even spent 8 months recouperating from an ACL reco and hoped that would help the hamstring mend but no luck (infact i think its worse due to my transplant coming from the hammy.) My hammies just seems to pull apart under only the slightest duress.

is something like cortisone going to help me? will it help to remove significant scar tissue?

is there anyhope for me after 5 years of punishment to this area?

Be careful, I had tenderness in the upper hammy, lower buttock for 5 years as well. Just 2 weeks ago the tendon ruptured. I did visit a sports physiatrist in New York City 5 yrs ago but no mention of any possible issue with the tendon (i did have a mri). I did also visit once or twic since then but the conversation was mostly around my back as I have the usual bulging discs and a decent amt of stenosis in the lower back. He sent me to physical therapy to stretch and stengthen the glut and hammy muscles but it did not help at all. I guessing that I may have had a partial tear for many yrs, but if so wonder why it never healed...especially in the off season.

Anyway, a surgeon I met with 2 weeks ago suggested rehab and not surgery, the physiatrist believes surgery is required so that I regain as much strength as possible. I'm visiting another surgeon next Tues for his opinion.

What is the status of your injury?

I experienced the pain whenever I was playing softball and stopped suddenly at a base. I play several times a week at a very competive level.
