Hi , 2 1/2 years ago i had an accident in a go-kart. My foot was wedged in a side rail and i crashed in a shed hitting a wall. Behind the wall was a 3x3 inch steel pole which my left foot went through fracturing my talus bone and stretching my tendons & ligaments to the max with severe nerve and soft tissure damage. The fracture was pinned and after some time in hospital, 3 months non wieght bearing, 3 months on grutches then down to 1 grutch till I could wall again 2 pain injections into my lower spine which didn't help and falling down our stairs a couple of times the year was gone and so was life as I knew it. Since then I have had 3 orthapaedic Docs, physio 3 times a week then 2times and now I am at once a week visits. Last Nov I had the Pins removed and pieces of bone and catilage removed I was very hopeful my foot would start getting better, not the case. My dorsiflexion is very limited, side to side movement is not bad but very painfull. In the mornings it is very sore and stiff then as the day goes on the pain becomes more severe and it is very swollen by night. Walking & standing for long periods is out of the question and the athritis is hell in winter and on rainy days. I am 42 but my foot feels like it's 80. The anti-inflammatory tablets i take have now given me gastritis. My Dr has talked about fusion but as we dont know how much of the pain is coming from the soft tissue and nerve damage I am a little worried. At Physio I have the IFT machine on between 50 & 60 still after all this time so the nerves are still a worry to me. I was so happy to find this site i have read everyones questions and answers now I hope someone can help me. Our Daughter is about to have our first grandchild and I would love to think that one day I will be able to be as active as I once was. If I do have the fusion how long will I be off my feet for?Waiting anxiously Donna

Read the thread about no ankle cartilage. I would suggest with fractured talus and now arthritis you must choose between: (1) live with the pain; (2) try ankle replacement - not great success but can try again if it doesn't work; (3) fusion - see comments in other thread; (4) amputation - I upset a few people by putting this on the list, but it actually would get mobility back (you could run in the paralympics). Obviously last resort.
