It must say something for the pressure that professional athletes are under that so many choose to retire (or go close to doing so) from a lifestyle that on the outside seems full of fun and money. Jamie Lyon is the latest to face the media scrutiny of his need for time away from football:

Three rugby league players have announced their retirements this week in different circumstances. Terry Hill, who had signed a one-year deal with South Sydney, has failed to get on to the field because of a chronic knee injury, which has prompted him to call it quits. Robbie Ross of the Melbourne Storm, whilst not at a new club, has also succumbed to chronic injury, in his case a disc prolapse of the low back. Jamie Lyon, a younger star with Parramatta, is the latest rugby league player to want time away from football because he is 'over it'. At this stage no one can say whether this will be a short or long-term exit from the game.
