Hi All,

I had my meniscus removed 3 months ago after tearing it in a rugby league match. i am joining the police force but have been forced to get svereal letters from different orrhtopedic surgeons in regards to my injury not being serious enough to be a cop. Since my injury i have recovered and come back to play league again and do my kick boxing and all sorts of training.

Do you think the police force will allow me to get the ok if i keep getting these different surgeons to give me the all clear?

It's a tough one. I think you are definitely fit to be a police officer, as after this sort of operation players can usually play rugby league for another 10+ years, which is much more intense than police work.

On the other hand, there is a good chance you might develop knee arthritis 20-30 years down the track. In the past, I know that police benefits have been very generous (e.g. if you developed knee arthritis at 50 years of age after working 20-25 years in the police force, they would give you a pension for 15 years after medical discharge).

I think the issue for them would be trying to minimise being responsible for a future liability such as this if you were struggling to work in your 50s.

Thanks for your response, my surgeon told me the samething, but in saying that, if a person applies for the police force and his or her family have a history of cancer, they wouldnt reject them cause the chances are they could develop cancer too. Its hard cause ive always aimed to be a cop and to have this happen its bloody hard to cop.

btw are you a medical student or doctor?

I would hope that there would be a common sense alternative that you could join up with the police force having a waiver that if you ever become unable to work because of that knee that they aren't responsible.

Can't tell you my qualifications because then I might expose myself to medicolegal liability!

my knee was bascially swollan and i couldn't straighten my leg, when i tried to i felt a sharp pain in the front of my knee. after a week i start to be able to lightly jog on it but any sharp turns caused me pain, after surgery i was a million bucks 4 weeks after my op i was back on the field playing league again and doing weights so it was a success
