Cricket Australia has just released its 2003 injury report, which summarises research that has been undertaken at the elite level over the past five seasons. The highlights included that a recommendation which was undertaken three years ago to place a boundary rope at all grounds has effectively eliminated fence collisions injuries and that batsmen, wicketkeepers and spin bowlers suffer very low rates of injuries. Fast bowlers have a similar injury prevalence to football players, and research is currently underway to better understand the risk factors and preventive methods in fast bowlers. On the playing side, Glenn McGrath (ankle impingement) is struggling to be available for the One Day series due to a prolonged rehab period after two operations on his ankle, while Brett Lee (abdominal strain), Jason Gillespie (side muscle strain), Stuart MacGill (calf strain), Ashley Noffke (lumbar stress fracture) have all recently returned from injury. For more information visit the cricket injuries section or research section. For opinions on the recent bowling injuries read Dr Peter Brukner's view and read Mike Coward's controversial argument that current bowlers don't bowl enough.
