Brief report from the NFL overnight. Stayed tuned as to whether this was heat stroke, a cardiac arrest or possibly substance related (although perhaps they will never know).
It is interesting as to why heat stroke deaths are common in American football but so rare in the Aussie codes. Possible explanations include: (1) uniform (2) size of the players - who is 141kg in the NRL or AFL? (3) slack drug codes in the NFL.

SAN Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Thomas Herrion collapsed and died following a pre-season American football match, the club announced overnight.
Herrion, 23, collapsed in the locker room following the 49ers' 26-21 loss to the Denver Broncos in a National Football League exhibition game.
He was immediately treated by team physicians, medical staff and paramedics. Herrion was given cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and transported to St. Anthony's Central Hospital, where he died three hours later.
"This is a colossal tragedy for the 49ers and the entire NFL community," said a statement on the 49ers' web site.
"We still do not know all of the details, however, our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Herrion family."
Herrion had been on the field for the 49ers' 14-play, 91-yard drive that ended with Cody Pickett's 23-yard touchdown run with two seconds remaining.
Minutes later came his locker room collapse, which concerned 49ers coach Mike Nolan far more than the loss.
"There are more important matters than the game right now," Nolan said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Thomas Herrion. He went down in the locker room and the medical staff went to him at that time.
"They were the only ones who were around him. Nobody other than the medical staff knew of what went on around him."
No cause of death was announced. Herrion, who was a 1.91m guard weighing in at 141kg, was in his first year with San Francisco but played college football at Utah State University and spent part of last season on the 49ers and Dallas practice squads.
He also played this year with the Hamburg Sea Devils in NFL Europe.
The player's death comes four years after a similar fatality when Korey Stringer, a right tackle with the Minnesota Vikings, also died in training camp due to complications from heatstroke.
Stringer developed symptoms of heatstroke including weakness and rapid breathing following the team's practice on a day in which the temperature reached the 42-degree mark.
