HAVING failed in his bid to return to the Sydney team for the finals, former captain Stuart Maxfield will not decide on his long-term future until after he has had knee surgery.

The 33-year-old Maxfield is out of contract at the end of this season and, having played only five games this season, the last against West Coast in round six, it seems likely that the chronic knee injury will bring an end to a 289-game career that began with Richmond in 1990.

But Swans coach Paul Roos said Maxfield had asked to leave talk about retirement until after his surgery to give him to time to weigh up whether he could play on.

"We had a pretty good chat about what he could do and once it was decided he couldn't go on this year, he just wanted to leave any decisions about the future on hold for awhile," said Roos. "There is certainly no pressure from us for him to decide that right now."

Maxfield had played in the Swans' plast two reserves games in an attempt to get back for the finals. But after the first game, his knee became badly swollen and he left the field in the final quarter of the second game on Sunday.
