Ok, I have this weird bruising on the bottom of my left foot. It is in the middle of my foot on the ball of it. The bruises are a dark purpleish blue in color and I've had them for two weeks and counting. Lately, when weight has been put on the foot for any amount of time, a sharp shooting pain goes up my leg and several times I have to grab on to something to keep from falling. Other times, it is a steady ache, but it never really goes down. I have been to the doctor to have it looked at, but he couldn't find anything. I also have gone to two other feet specialists. I do where orthodics becuase I have very flat feet that pronate. I ran cross country for three years and finally stopped due to the pain that was coming from both my feet. Right now, I am not running competitivly but I am running for fun a few times a week. However, During the last few days, I've noticed that the bottom of my left foot was really sore and I am wondering if I have torn a muscle or fractured something. What things should I be doing?

Most importantly, what should I not be doing? I don't want to aggrivate it because it is already quite painful.

Thanks for any info. I am stumped

Try to stay off your feet for a few days (3-5) and see how it is. If it's no better after that, head to a Doctor and see about getting an X-ray if possible.

I would stop Running. Immediately.

if you have been getting the pain for a while, then a stress fracture would definately show up. The doctor/ foot specialist/ podiatrist hasn't sent you for an xray already??

the orthotics obviously should help minimalise the pressure to the balls of you feet (if that was the reason they were made), through improving foot positioning and redistributing pressure.

if i were you, the first thing i would do is get an xray to rule out any fracutre or stress fracture.

Hi- I currently have the bruise, but not the pain. Perhaps we have the same thing?

Using the web I've found a site that seemingly points to what ails us, or at least me. See the bit about METATARSALGIA at http://www.michiganrunner.com/august/A_runhealth.html

Regards-

Stress fractures are the most important cause of foot pain to rule out if you have been exercising a lot. Morton's neuroma is another common diagnosis.

See a sports medicine doctor and get him to refer you to having an MRI done to check for cysts and ligament damage. Also have a look at this site www.trcc.com.au

I have the same thing on my feet, except it is on both feet. I happened to me today to both of my feet at the same time. They hurt immensely for about 10 minutes and now a few hours later I have bruises on both feet. Did you every find out what is was?

HelloOn Saturday, after doing a lot of preparation i.e. taking stuff outof the kitchen for a new cooker to be installed, I went to walk up the garden and realised Ihad a bad pain in my foot. On looking, I saw that the ball of my foot was swollen up. This happened very suddenly, as I had had no trouble withmy feet; I asked my daughter, who was visitng, what she thought it was and she said "gout, mum". GOUT I exclaimed "how come, iI don't drink (though I have been sort of imbibing a very tiny amount daily for the past week, which is so unusual forme). The other thing I have been doing is eating nuts and raisins, and I found out that raising are very acidic. Anyway, Sunday the swelling was still there, and today I have patchy mauve markings which are going up to my big toe, and appear to be on the outside of the ball of my left foot. I am taking it to be bruising, and am resting it as much as possible. In England, we have "NHS Direct" which is a phoe-in medical team, so I phoned them and they told me to put my fot in warm water 4 times a day, and try to keep it up - practically impossible for me. Hope this helps, Rene.
