  • Sydney hand specialists

This is by no means meant to be an exhaustive list, but a guide to some of the specialists who see exclusively or mainly sports-related hand problems in Sydney. In Sydney the level of sub-specialisation is greater than other states because of the greater population, but I would encourage anyone from other cities to post a guide to the names in their town. I don't expect a ranking system, just a helpful guide as to who is working in the area:

    Surgeons:
Ian Hargreaves, 187 Macquarie St Sydney, 92326037
Peter Scougall, 111 Anzac Pde Kensington, 92326037
Bruce Connolly, 187 Macquarie St, Sydney, 92353666
Doug Wheen, 187 Macquarie St, Sydney, 92353666
Richard Honner, 56 Burwood Rd Burwood, 97452577
Stuart Myers, 160 Belmore Rd Randwick, 93995333
Michael Tonkin, North Shore Private Hospital, 94371211

If anyone knows of others who are experts in hand injuries in Sydney, please add to the list (or start another thread if you know of others in a different state).

A lot of the hand specialists in Sydney are based in Macquarie St and do public clinics at Sydney hospital and private work at St Luke's hospital. This is probably Australia's most prominent and famous hand unit and was founded by Tim Herbert, who invented the Herbert screw for fixing scaphoid fractures.

There are some good hand therapists who work with these surgeons, led by Rosemary Prosser. There is also a good imaging unit nearby (Advanced Medical Imaging, Macquarie St), led by John Korber, which specialises in ultrasound of hand problems.

At North Shore Private hospital, there is also a large specialist hand unit. In addition to Michael Tonkin, there are five or six other hand specialist surgeons (e.g. Cladia Gschwind 94341211) at Sydney Hand Surgery Associates. There are also specialist hand physiotherapists at Susan Dunn Hand Therapy 94607788.

Nearly lost finger after DR. Nabarro operated on it

My daughter nearly lost her finger after DR. Nabarro operated on it. It was a fracture. During the surgery he put in some wires and buttons on too tight, she lost circulation in her finger. As it would bandaged and she was given a lot of pain killers to mask the problem. Another day and she would have lost it completely, as it is it is difigured.

Given that the above post was made by someone anonymous, please bear in mind that the sentiments of this patient's mother can't be verified. However, it appears to be a fair comment in that it is not a post which is abusive of the surgeon involved.

Remember that all surgeons get complications and that the difference between a good and a bad surgeon is often (1) the complication rate, which can't be determined on a sample size of n=1 and (2) how the surgeon handles complications, in terms of fixing the problem up as best as can be done and in showing compassion.

I just read a comment by Dr Paul Niselle of MDAV stating that it was surprising the number of medical negligence cases that occurred in Australia due to surgeons working outside their area of expertise or subspecialty, so it is worth seeking out surgeons who specialise in the area of your specific problem, particularly for an elective case.

                  Dr Scougall

Just wanted to add that I recently had surgery to repair TFCC tear in left wrist....an injury from tennis.
The procedure was performed by Dr Peter Scougall and I have nothing but praise for his work and after care.

Southern Sydney Hand Specialists also have rooms on Belgrave St, Kogarah just up the road from St George Public (back entrance). Not sure how good they are, but my GP recommended them for scar treatment. They look at all injuries relating to your hands, fingers and forearms, including tendon/ligament damage, Physio, traumatic injuries etc and will laser treat scars in these areas.

In regards to the incident at St George Private, unfortunatly compartment syndrome (which is what was described) is a potential complication of any orthopaedic surgery and if no additional surgery was required i.e. a faciotomy - then your daughter was extremely lucky.

To add to that i had nearly lost my left little finger in a workplace accident. Dr Nabarro operated on it & apaprt from scarring which can't be helped my finger is pretty good now. Taking into consideration the extent of my accident, in which i completely tore all my nerves & tendons & also fractured it he did a brilliant job. He also re-operated a while after to help relieve the scar tissue that had built up. Again i praise him for his work.

The blame game and Dr Nabarro!

Just for the mother who wrote about her daughter nearly losing a finger because of Dr Nabarro......... I have had two hands surgeries performed by Dr Nabarro and his team late last year. I now have full use of both of my hands - My surgery involved risk that I had to consider (no matter how small) but having the surgery far out weighed not having the surgery.

If Dr Nabarro did not operate on your daughters finger, what would it be like now? It is important to recognise that all operations involve risk and assessment of risk...

You are to blame for accepting the risks on behalf of your child!

Thankyou to Dr Nabarro and your team...

                              Kiri
