Queensland are counting the cost of their State of Origin series victory with several players suffering potentially serious injuries in Wednesday night's torrid encounter.

NSW prevented a series clean sweep with an 18-4 victory at Suncorp Stadium, but the Queensland dressing room was left looking like a casualty ward after the game.

Brisbane winger Brent Tate appeared the worse affected, the New Zealand Warriors-bound flyer to undergo scans on possible cruciate ligament damage in his left knee which could end his season.

Broncos teammates Karmichael Hunt (corks) and Justin Hodges (ankle) are also in extreme doubt for Friday night's south-Queensland derby against Gold Coast, while Melbourne duo Dallas Johnson (concussion) and Greg Inglis (knee) are unlikely to be right for the Storm's clash against South Sydney on Saturday night.

The injuries and the tight loss took the gloss off Queensland's series victory celebrations, though Maroons skipper Darren Lockyer said he was proud of his undermanned team's efforts.

"We didn't get the result, but I am happy with our effort," Lockyer said.

"You can't ask for much more."

The win will give the Blues something to build on for next season though it is likely it will be under a new coaching regime with Melbourne's Craig Bellamy the man tipped to take over from incumbent Graham Murray.

The Blues didn't escape unscathed from Wednesday's brutal contest with halfback Brett Kimmorley likely to miss 4-6 weeks with medial ligament damage in his knee.

Kimmorley suffered the injury in the opening minutes of the game but battled on bravely before being replaced by Kurt Gidley late in the game.

    Tate's knee

Does anyone know whether Tate's knee injury from earlier in the same Origin series was the one he injured last night? It is pretty rare to injure an ACL after doing a medial on the same knee, but in theory this is the risk of coming back early after an MCL. Neither of his knees were taped last night which was surprising.

If it was a grade 1-2 MCL a month ago followed by a contact injury (which didn't look that horrible - Hayne fell on him) which has retorn MCL and done the ACL, then it is a warning to stay out after an MCL and also to tape up on return. However, I don't think there was much info about his initial injury and whether it was an MCL or something else. Interesting to hear what it was if anyone knows.

From Origin 2 match report in The Australian:

Queensland's first penalty came with 18 minutes to go - when Price fell down at the play-the-ball - and that was the invitation Mal Meninga's team needed. Centre Steven Bell, shifted to the wing for Brent Tate who wrenched the medial ligament in his knee, pounced on a Thurston kick to score and put Queensland ahead 10-6.
