Someone's doctor on here recommended 2 months.
I didn't ask my doctor... I figured his reply would've been "when you feel ready" since I asked about positions & motions to avoid and the reply for that was "when you feel ready".
I'm 1 month post op, and my hip certainly isn't ready.
Depends on the individual.;)

I saw Mr O'Donnell last week also, i asked him the sex question and he said as soon as its not painful probably around a week to 10 days (possibly earlier), would depend on the individual, but i think in relation to this issue it would be easier being a guy. I remember earlier postings on this forum that there doctor wouldnt talk about the sex question. O'Donnell had no problem discussing it with me.

Hey Soccermom - sorry I have not yet been in the same situation but I can see that happenng to me. My left hip has FAI & they went in keyhole only to debride/burn off the tear as it was too large to repair. Since they were unable to deal with the FAI I susspect the likelyhood of another tear/more damage happening is quite high. I did ask my surgeon since the labrum has been debrided and that it is not as thick as it was, what would be the complications/sacrefices for removing the damaged part. He said that with the part of the labrum removed the joint will never have it's normal functionallity but the benefits far out-weigh the risks as the torn part causes more problems/pain.Quote:

NikkiNZ, I'm 5 weeks post op on Monday, and for sure at 2 weeks post op, especially 3 weeks post op, one feels like things won't get better. It takes time. I found since I started physio a week ago, today it feels so different. 5 weeks later, I can now start feeling the benefits. I was able to walk without my crutches today, quasi normally (wasn't graceful nor gruesome, there was a limp & I was slow) for 30 feet. It was awsome! Doesn't mean though that other problems haven't surfaced though. But all in all, things are progressing slowly.
Even though arthroscopy seems somewhat a non invasive (compared to open surgery), it's still quite traumatic to the body. Our minds think that we shoud be able to get up & get on with it, but the body doesn't have the same agenda.
I'm glad that I have a lot of support around me: everyone says: Even though you may think you are fine or should be able to do more or think nothing is happening; take it easy, take baby steps or you'll regret it! Like the one step forward 2 steps back.
The first 3 weeks, I was horizontal 90% of the time. 4th week, 70% of the time. This week (5th), I lay down 60% of the time.
So in the meantime: enjoy the time off!
PS I too felt the same pain & catching up to 4 weeks post op. That's the body's way of saying: ouch I'm tender here, stay off, don't bug me & let me heal.

I think I had read you had a cyst in the acetabulum. Is this delaying your recovery?
I have been given a rather rosy picture by my surgeon and judging from what I read here I am afraid he may not be giving me a realistic picture.
I was hoping to be able to fly from Australia to Denmark 3-4 weeks post surgery.

According to the operative report, the surgeon wrote he did a labral chondral debridment with microperforation. Just before going into the OR he told me he wasn't going to address the cyst in the acetabulum after all. I also asked how long I'd be on crutches & he said for 2 weeks.
The first week, I slept most of the time because of the "physical trauma" of having that surgery done, the anaesthetic & all the painkillers, and then taking the endocet during that first week. Maybe it depends on how one reacts after having a procedure done? I'd get up and hobble around just to get the feeling back in my behind from being stretched out so much.
By the end of the second week I felt ready to do more but I couldn't sit for more than an hour, and standing or moving about I could only bare in 15 min increments, my "good" hip was still quite sore from having to work more. So physically, I really couldn't do more even if I wanted. I called the surgeon's office & asked if I could start weight bearing a little & I was told no.
So maybe if my good hip hadn't hurt so much, I would've been up & about more but I was only allowed to toe touch. I was also bored out of my mind & couldn't venture outside because winter came with a big fanfare over here. Impossible to tackle with crutches!
I honestly thought that physio was going to be a slow process too but only a week into it now and today I was able to walk with a moderate limp on a couple of occassions for 30 or 60 ft without my crutches. (When I started physio, I couldn't weight bare at all & the first three days of it, I was in a lot of pain) We were out & about all day, well me mainly sitting in the vehicle watching everyone do my work (I have 2 horses) and feeling like a third wheel everywhere we went. But a quasi normal day never the less, and tonight my hips are a bit tender & I need support with walking. I'm taking it slow & easy to make sure I have enough time to properly heal. My OH & I run our own business, so I don't have pressures to return to work. I just do what I can.
I remember being asked if I wanted to be part of a study & I agreed, so maybe my group is doing a different rehab approach? The surgeon had mentioned that his approach was going to be different.
Oh when I asked about the cyst 3 weeks post op, he said he couldn't take care of it & something about OA already playing a part. I honestly can't remember what else he said about it. But from learning more on what I have & what was done, a slow recovery is expected. And... everybody reacts differently. I was told the surgery may very well make things worse because it's not recommend for people who have OA.
So you may very well be able to fly on your 4th week.
I think each person's recovery is different - I know that my muscles were in a very bad way pre-op as it took 2 years to get the surgery, so that makes recovery slower.
Also as with LMS - recovering from the distraction of the hip during the surgery is a big part - some people may heal quick, I think for me the pain in the glutes/groin/thigh muscles from the disctraction was very bad and the muscles are stil coming right.
You may be able to fly fine after 4 weeks - but do take things slowly as the more you aggrivate the labrum/muscles after surgery, the longer your recovery.
I had my first physio appt last week (1.5 weeks after surgery) and to me that felt too soon. I benefited much better from my partner rubbing E-Balm into my surrounding muscles - my back & my leg muscles as the rest of my body siezed from the strain of compensating.
I also had my good hip start to play up with the increased weight bearing on that side & felt the bursa area start to get irritated so limited the amount of time on my feet & slept a lot. Sleep is your friend - it heals you :) I have also increased my water intake to 2+ litres a day to flush out the toxins in my muscles, started taking a suppliment with magnesium/zinc/vit c.
Good luck with your surgery & LMS hope your recovery keeps pn the right track, I know what your going through!
