I was very impresssed with Mr Schilders.I'm waiting for a NHS referral from my local surgeon, and so far it has been a month and still Bradford haven't received it.I am seriously considering paying private, but don't have unlimited funds and am not sure how much the final cost would be. Mr schilders said the surgery would be about £4500, but then there would also be an MRA, plus possibly physio and further appointments etc.l

Were did you have the physio, and how long for? ( Until normal functions were possible, bear in mind I'm not a footballer !!Lol )

Hi Kate,

I had the physio at the Capio Clinic, but ended up stopping almost immediately after the hydrapool sessions (it was a 3 hour round trip for me, which seemed a long way to go to lift your leg up n down 10 times). Again, all of the physio was paid for through BUPA.

You will need to be very patient. It's taken me 6 months to reach a point were I can start running again (in a straight line) and I still get the occasional twinge. I cant wait to start zig-zagging !!!

I would'nt want to pay £4.5k though. I'd be on the phone every day chasing them. Just keep reminding them that you are still there / waiting.

I was just reading some of your posts and was wondering how you are holding up?
How are the shoulders and knees?

I have 2 sore hips and a sore knee, but your problems seem way worse than mine!
I'm a bit worried about my shoulders since they are also ball and socket. I don't have any shoulder symptoms, but am worried that if the hips are stuffed the shoulders might be prone to the same thing...

so 3 mos ago i had my torn labrum debrided and the femoral head/neck shaved with an arthoscopic approach. i had a 3 mo f/u today....everything is good. i did well through PT and aside from an occasional hurt here or there, i am most glad that i did it. that hip feels very good and i anticipate things just getting better from here (with THAT hip).

the surgeon finally relooked at my other hip. i had only a labral tear debrided in it 10 mos ago. it has never picked up and has actually continued to go downhill. cannot sit without pain in it, catches, aches after activity, hurts most of the night. surprise, surprise....it has impingement as well and that was not corrected in the surgery 10 mos ago (done by a different surgeon that did the surgery 3 mos ago).

so now...i get to do it all over again! what a drag. i dred the process. i finished up the all the hip xrays today....mra late next week....surgery. surgery in july!!!! partially due to surgeon's schedule and mine. and oh, yeah...this surgery is going to have a psoas lengthening done as well.

Soccermom: glad to hear your 3 month follow up went well. Would you mind describing what it entailed? I'm having my 3 month f/u next month, and would like to be prepared because I found the previous appointments quite dissapointing. Meaning, my surgeon, I found was not very descriptive but rather very general in his info that could've been applied to anyone. I filled in the blanks by going online!

How do they know that the surgery has been beneficial, aside from the current physical aftermath that you can describe on how you feel? (Hmmm did that make sense?) Do they only use manipulations & go by that?

What are you allowed to do? How is your gait when you walk? I'm sure there must be some movements that your hip can't take yet?

Sorry to hear your other hip is so painful though.

The stable where I work part time as an instructor want me to predict how I'll be in 2 months so they can make up the schedule. I told them that it didn't look as good as they (stable) hoped & I'd still have many limitations.

he did very little assessment of my 3 month hip. mostly about the other one. i know what you mean though about not getting a lot of info. i think that is because the recovery is so long. i think the newest hip progressed by leaps and bounds from 8-12 wks. i also just know it is better by comparison to the other hip that is 10 mos out.

my gait is messed up from the other hip...so hard to tell. but i do think it would be fine otherwise. my restrictions for running and sports won't be lifted until 6 mos post op....but i can't anyway due to the other hip. i would be starting more early, though, if the other was better.

i don't know about horse back riding...although i can't ride a horse when i am well! how far out are you? like i said....the first 4weeks was fine, then weeks 4-6 weren't too bad. weeks 6-12 were filled with many ups and downs though. the last 1-2 weeks have been better and i can tell the difference. we will see how the next 4 go.

Thanks for answering. I'm almost 8 weeks post op. I understand what you mean by the ups & downs though.
As for riding, I had to stop a year or so ago, not because it hurt but because it could be a safety issue. I train horses. So as much as I want to get back at it, I've waited this long... a few more months is no big deal.

The main concern is my being able to teach. In therapeutic riding, the instructor is very hands on assisting the rider. And when you're assiting a client that weighs just as much as you do, and they slightly go off balance, right now I'm in no position to stop the domino effect it would cause. My left side is my strong side and of course is the affected side as well.

But reading that your sport restriction is lifted at 6 months post op, it gives me a good indication of how long it realistically takes for the hip to become strong & stable enough to attemp something more than just being able to walk & do simple daily activities comfortably.

Really glad to hear that your recent scope has been a success and that things are progressing well.
Sorry tho, that you need further surgery on the other leg. Hopefully this surgeon will address the impingement next time and you will then have equally as good a recovery next time.Does this surgeon think that there has been further cartiledge damage to the oringinal hip as the pain is getting worse or just that it has retorn due to the impingement not being fixed? Also I was wondering if a second scope is anymore complicated than the first time it is done ?

he is not saying if he thinks there is further damage....i have to have another mra though. although my other 2 mra's never showed tears and i had tears. quite frankly, he did not discuss any issues with having another scope. i am worried that i have already had some of the labrum debrided and that area where the original tear is thinner than normal...so if it is torn again in that same area, how much labrum will be left when that is debrided??? i don't think it is torn...but i think it may be fraying. i have some catching, but not as significant as the first time.
