Unhappy Severe Anklepain for 3 years, injury, male 23(picturess incl)

Anklepain along top of front outer joint(left ankle)

im a healthy 23year old male from N.ireland
i injured my ankle on a cattle grid 3 years ago exactly where
i went over on the ankle both ways (Most common way) then the other way pulling ankle up to the left, not that painfull at the time but next day swollen up like a ballon and in server pain for weeks and not able to wait-bear,for months after injury, muscles in my front lower leg would go into spasm and seize for a couple of days at a time

since then iv had:along top of front outer joint(left ankle)

    3 x-rays
    2 MRI scans
    2 steriod injections
    athoscopy
    40+ sessions physiotherapy
    all sorts of medication
goin to an anethiastist(private pain clinic next week)

x ray brought up nothing broken or fractured in all x rays

2 mri's brought up nothing signicicant at all!!
after the first(2years ago) i got a arthoscopy done and
very small piece of inflamed tissue waz removed,
same pain came back after a week or 2

next mri was only a month ago, brought up nothing, a healthy ankle

2 steroid injections(1year ago) were only giving to point of pain, blind
both i though gave couple of days of relief, unsure

physio was just a real waste of money and time(throughout)

hopeing pain clinic will be able to provide some progress..
    what will this involve all?

iv tryed all shorts of medication

    ibrufin-no good at all

    volsaid retart 75-no good

    anti-inflamitory rub in gel-no good

    cocodamol-num's the pain

    amitriptiline-for nerve pain no good

    lyrica-for nerve pain no good

im off work at the moment due to this and cant afford to be ,
too painfull to walk around all day

Pain at moment is dull trobbing heated pain like headache
just above ankle joint on area size of golf ball,
i will upload pictures of affected area later

the pain is worse at night

the area is not swollen or discoloured

i have full power and full movement in the ankle
and pain cant really be increased by touching or any certain movement!!!

but pain is very painfull and stops me in my tracks

since the inury the pain sometimes settles down itself for a few days ever month or 2,very random, serious pain rite now tho,
hasnt settled in 2 months but never completly goes

    doctors- dont no whats wrong
    ankle consultant/surgeon-dosnt no whats wrong

bluffed me off to pain clinic now to see

some pics below just click on them

any help or advice at all is appriciate

Your ankle sounds very painful. I have nothing but sympathy having suffered daily pain over months and years like you have. I'm afraid I can't offer any wisdom or advice - it sounds like you have done everything sensible really and its a real mystery.
I saw a specialist sports physio in London who looked at the alignment of my knees and hips, rather than just the ankle joint, and gave me exercises for my knees, back and stomach and I think this is one of the factors which have enabled my recovery (long may it continue - its been a rocky road).
I hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

hey tazmin, thanks for your reply, had some progress since

    27/9/10

ok,still in constant pain, since my last description whats all happened,i have been to my Gp K.deeny to which he has prescribed me co-drymol 500mg for pain relief and sick note as i get professional help,i have been resting my ankle full time mostly elevateing it for good blood flow,i have started back on lyrica for time being to see if i can get any benefits at all,i ave been to my appointment at the private pain clinic with Dr terry muldoon on weds 22nd sept, made some progress there had a good throuough consultation with him,he refers it as a pretty rare case but we do have options and he'l do his best to get my pain under control,he is not sure weather its RSD as i have no real swelling or loss of colour/hair at pain site but is convinced its a type of neuropathic pain to which he has placed me on NHS waiting list for a Gluanethidine Biers Block procedure which he think will give significant pain relief for this condition with writing to a Sister henderson and my GP Dr K deeny and a letter from himself(Dr.T Muldooon) putting the case down a Urgent and my job is a threat to speed the waiting time up,Until that he is puttting me on a trial of new new medications to see if they can give me good constant pain relief, firstly Nabilone and then Ketamine which i am waiting to be contacted by a sister henderson to start first trial ASAP,hopefully within days, also i have been in contact with another othapedic consultant who specialises in ankles based in england and explained my circumstances to him,to which i have obtained a cd-rom of MRI of my ankle a month ago and iv forwarded it to him for a 2nd opinion incase something was missed ,which his radiooligist will give a report and consultant will review in due course

I would definitely get a second opinion. Have you checked into prolotherapy options?

My son has endured similar problem for 3 years...I do feel for you. Not having relief is very frustrating and debilitating. Keep demanding, and looking for options. Are they sure you do not have an osteochondral lesion or perhaps nerve damage? Good luck to you.
