I hope someone out there can help me. I am a 32 year old male who has played sports all my life. I spained my ankle very badly about 5 years ago and have had problems ever since. I have sprined my ankle many times before but this time was different. I went back playing football too early after a sprain and I sprained it again. I couldn't walk for 5 days and when it finally healed I noticed that the talus was sticking out more on my injured right ankle than on my good left one(image below). I also noticed that when my injured foot is in a dorsiflexion position and I curl my toes downwards, I get a clicking sound near my achilles tendon. I also get frequent clicking in my knee when it is straightened from a bent position. The weird thing is that I don't have any pain in my injured ankle. The pain is mostly in my knee but I also have some pain in my hip, back and neck on the same side.
Over the last 5 years I have noticed that my right calf muscle (on the injured leg) is shrinking and is now smaller than my good left leg. The other thing is that the anterior drawer test on my injured right ankle shows a lot of laxity compared to the left ankle.
I have had an MRI and an xray and the doctors are telling me that there is no abnormalities. I have been referred to an orthopaedic specialist to examine me further.
I suppose my question is, does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone or does anyone know what could be wrong? I think it may be a problem with my ATFL or some other ligament damage from my own research but surely the MRI would have spotted this?? The MRI is only as good as the doctor reading it, so would anybody recommend another scan for a second opinion?
I mixed up dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. I get the clicking sound near my achilles tendon when my injured foot is in a plantarflexion position and I curl my toes downwards.
