I recently torn my ACL and went to an Orthopaedic Surgeon who recommended a hamstring reconstruction. The cost quoted to me was about $4,500 for the surgery plus $500 for the assistant (not including hospital fees etc). Speaking with a couple of guys at work who had it done, they suggested that was a little on the high side, just wondering if that's the case? I don't mind paying for good work, as I want to be able to play soccer again, but obviously it's a lot of money, so would like to get some other opinions.
thanks,
Tim.
Hey!
i've been quoted $7200 which includes hospital fees etc.
Who's your surgeon?
Hi there,
I had LARS performed and I was quoted about $5,000 including assistance fee. I went to a top surgeon as well.
Don't forget that this does NOT include the Anesthetists fee. The Anesthetist will charge about $1200 on top of this separately.
However, out of that $5000, Medicare paid about $1200. Which brought it to about $3,800. I also had private health so take another $400 off that and I ended up being about $3400 out of pocket for the Surgeon. With the Anesthetist, Medicare gave me about $400 back and my private health I think have me under $200, so I was about $600-700 out of pocket for the Anesthetist.
In total, I was about $4,000 out of pocket. HOWEVER, you can claim back some of that for tax as well, so out of pocket worked out to a little less than that after Tax.
Your quote sounds about right if you're seeing a good, known surgeon.
Bare in mind - If you DON'T have private health insurance then that's when it's really going to cost you because it's the Hospital fees that would be the killer. Hospital fees are anywhere from $5000-7000 alone if you're not covered by private health.
Hope that helps. Any other questions, feel free to ask.
Hi! I'm 16 years old, rupture my ACL 3 months ago but only found out that it was actually an ACL rupture 6 weeks, and am currently waiting for surgery
The first surgeon I saw charged me about 9500 all up (hamstring graft)-if I remember correctly it was 3450 for the surgeon, 830 for the Anesthesist and 1200 for the assistant, and the rest for hospital fees. unfortunately my family does NOT have private health insurance, so I would only be able to claim 2500 with netball insurance and whatever medicare would give me, which I think was about 1000. SO I still would've ended up being out of pocket about 6000 or so.
But after talking with a senior player at my netball club who had her reco done about 2 months before, she said that was very high as she only got charged 6500....so I got the name of her surgeon and after consulting wiht him got a much better quote of 7041 today, (including all hospital and surgeon fees)....so now total out of pocket costs for me are only about 3500...but still unfortunately 2000 more than I can afford, so I am on the public waiting lsit at the moment:/
Anyway, hope that helps, and good luck!!
