Default Med J Aust laments lack of obesity control

From the editorial in the Med J Aust:

    http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/...in_010506.html

Bottom line is that we have a government NOT committed to doing anything about the problem - Abbott and Howard say it's up to the individual not government problem and Beasley doesn't suggest anything otherwise.

Within the medical profession, new specialties like sports medicine, which are placed to help combat the obesity epidemic, have been LOCKED OUT of having a sphere of influence within medicine, by being shunned by the rest of the profession.

It would be nice if Tony Abbott put his hand up and said, "the buck stops with me in terms of physical inactivity and obesity - I am going to appoint a body to both monitor trends in this area and be accountable, and push for policy change within all levels of government to make a difference". His attitude is that it is an individual problem and apart from a few awareness campaigns he plans to sit on his hands on this issue.
