    Default Ankle Sprain

I went to the doctor on Monday and she told me i had a sprained ankle and strapped it and sent me on my way and told me i could do moderate excercise. I have only done a bit of walking with my ankle strapped but when i take the strapping off i can barely stand up, is that normal?

I think the doctor just wanted me out of there quick and didnt really care what was wrong with me. I am going to see a physio if it dosent get better in a few days.

    Hi there,

It doesn't sound like you've had very good advice to date.

When you sprain your ankle it weakens the joint. So, it's not surprising you can hardly stand on it.

I would strongly suggest you go and see a sports physician rather than a GP. They will be able to give you some good advice and refer you to a good physio. Whereabouts are you based ?

It's really important that you ice your ankle to reduce the swelling. I wouldn't do any exercise until you've been given some further advice about it. I am also a sports trainer and the first thing we do when a player injures their ankle is to ice it and then use a compression bandage.

About 12 years ago I badly sprained my ankle and wasn't given very good advice. As a result I developed a very unstable ankle and have had two ankle reconstructions. It's now very stable and able to do lots of exercise.

Let us know how you go.

I sprained my right ankle 3 years ago, I was on crutches for 14 days (2 weeks) then could walk again, bit stiff for a little while but I was running in know time. 4 weeks ago I fractured my left fibula about 1.5 inches up from the ankle joint (give or take a few centimeters) luckily it was not to bad as I don't need surgery and was put in a walking boot after 2.5 weeks which I get off in 2 weeks time (yay!), any who I Remember the sprain hurt allot more than the fracture and I'm talking allot more! the fracture is still stiff now and hurt for the first 2 or 3 days as well as pain in my calf muscle from lack of muscle use, but the sprain was murderous for the first week, I got like 2 nights sleep, the fracture is more serious and can cause way more complications than a sprain yet the sprain hurt a tone more, why is this??

I just would have reccomended NOT to keep your leg elevated!
My mums friend about 3 years ago sprained her ankle, elevated like the GP said to, walked to school to drop off her kids and died 30 minutes later from a clot that went to her brain when she statred to move like usual

    Hi there,

This is a very unusual case and doesn't happen very often.

It's important to elevate particularly in the first 48 hours and regularly ice the ankle. Compression is also very important to help reduce the swelling. Once the swelling has subsided a bit it's important to get going with some physio and gradually increase your walking.

Yes, Please get an xray and if possible an MRI. When I sprained my ankle last year nothing showed up in the intial xray. All along I had begged for an MRI. When the MRI was finally done, the results showed that the tip of my fibula had broken off and part of the ligament had torn off with it.....I am having many difficulties several months later because of the late proper diagnos.
