AUSTRALIA'S World Cup pace bowling spearhead Shaun Tait is only a half chance of playing in the inaugural Twenty20 equivalent as he is to undergo surgery to his troublesome right elbow.

Tait will tomorrow have arthroscopic work done on the elbow, which was sore intermittently throughout the 2006-07 season.

Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said that following surgery, Tait would be unable to bowl until August, leaving him in doubt for the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa in September.

"Shaun is undergoing arthroscopic surgery to relieve soft-tissue impingement," Kountouris said. "We are hoping he will be back bowling by mid-August. This would leave him with a 50-50 chance of playing in South Africa."

Tait wore a bandage/brace on his elbow throughout the second half of the season and the World Cup.

However the problem did not prevent him from claiming 23 important wickets in the tournament to entrench himself in Australia's pace plans for the future.
