When I fell in the shower, I hurt my thumb. It has been sore for a week now. The base of my thumb developed a bruise and a bump is felt at the thumb?s base on the palm side of my hand. I have iced it and took advil but that is not working. Do you think I might have sprained my thumb? My wrist is also sore.
Well, having given the approptiate immediate treatment, maybe worth going to dr and get sm xrays. Its easy to dismiss hand fractures fro bruising. I kept telling my ortho guys it hurt and they kept saying its ok- they went back and looked at xrays taken the wk of injury and i had 3 busted bones! Took a total of 5mths to heal them and needed a thumb recon as ruptured 3 ligaments and joint capsule! Atleast u have the answer u need then. Its better to be safe then sorry. Bruising does however take a bit of time to show and also if its bone thats bruised it can be painful for months. Bite the bullet and go get it assessed. If its limiting your everyday life, worth the trip trust me!
It has been seven weeks since I fell in the shower and my Wrist, hand, and thumb are still sore. I fell on an outstretched hand. I got soap in my eyes and as I tried to turn around I slipped while I had both hands on the wall. My right one in back of me and my left on the side of me and as I fell, both hands went all the way down until I reached the tub surround. My left thumb bent inward underneath my left hand when I hit the tub surround. The pain immediately begun and it was awful. Do you think it might be more than just a sprain?
I got it checked out and they diagnosed me as a sprained wrist and hand. But it is still sore, swollen, and bruised, so I got a referral to Orthopedics. It is swollen on the palm side of my hand where the thumb is and near the wrist and there is a bump also on one of my thumb bones
This was because when I got surgery on my ankle in April, a few weeks later, I tried to take a shower and not put alot of weight on my ankle and that is how I fell. As I turned around I slipped.
I posted on this site months ago to get some advice on my injury and I want to update you on this injury. It all started back in May when I fell in the shower on the outstretched hand and injured my wrist, hand, and thumb and since then, it is still sore. It has been four months and it is still swollen and sore. It also still hurts in the scaphoid area. I got referred to a hand specialist and hopefully he can find out what is wrong. The x-ray showed a possible hairline fracture when I went to the doctors a couple months ago, so the Orthopedist can verify that. What I don't understand is why it is still sore and not healing?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Cassie
Hopefully they can give you an appropriate diagnosis. It sound like you may have a schaphiod crack or break. Either that or you may have DeQuervain's Tenosynovitis. This is pain at the base of the thumb at the wrist. I have been having problems with what I believe is this, It's what my doc said. I was initially scheduled for something separate, a tfcc wrist surgery. Just over 1 month prior to the procedure i fell off my porch landing on my thumbside of wrist. This was aggrevating because I already had such problems with the tfcc on the other side of the wrist. Anyway, I had the tfcc surgery done months ago and recovering has been difficult. On top of it I still having problems with the base of my thumb. I figured it would just heal while recouperating from the other surgery, but it's been slow going as well. Doc say that part is the DeQuervain's Tenosynovitis and recommended a steroid shot next visit if no improvement. So that may help you as well. I feel mine is starting to improve but the tfcc site where they did the original surgery has been slow and painfull. But I think it's getting there too,. It seems that these things take patience but will heal with time.
Good luck to you.
Thank you for replying. I went to a hand specialist and got a cortisone shot. My doctor said if that doesn't work than I will need surgery. The cortisone shot made the pain worse and I can hardly move my wrist and hand so I will call the surgeon and schedule the surgery. My diagnosis: I have a hairline fracture and a partially torn ligament.
