Default Can anyone recommend a good young hip surgeon in the UK?

    Hi,

I've just stumbled across this website and it is brillant. I can't believe that so many other people have had the same experiences...

I'm pretty much at the beginning of the journey. After recurrent trochanteric bursistis for 2 years I developed pain in my groin area and on sitting. The physio thinks it is FAI and my GP is happy to refer me to an orthopaedic hip specialist - the only question is who?

I don't know where to start looking - can anyone help? I'd prefer close to London if possible.

    Thanks very much

    Kit

Richard Field who is the Clinical Research Director of SWLEOC at Epsom Hospital is the surgeon who operated on me (FAI & Labrum Repair). Privately he operates out of St Anthony's Hospital in Cheam, Surrey. His contact details are on their website.

He is regarded as one of the best in the UK. I believe he has done in excess of 45+ FAI operations.

There is another guy in London called De Villers.

Thank you! I'll look into him. Did he do all the initial investigations and everything for you too? I haven't had an MRI or anything yet.

I'm trying to get to see Richard Villar at the moment but proving quite difficult...

    Any other ideas from anyone?

    Thanks

Yes his clinic is based at St Helier Hospital, Sutton. All the tests CT & MRI were performed there.

Being based in the South East of England we are lucky that we have two of the leading FAI Surgeon in the World.

    Hi Kit,

Another option for you is Ernst Schilders in Bradford. Appreciate this is not in the SE as you mentioned but thought you might like to know anyway.

I'm based south of London too but travelled to see him based on recommendations from other consultants, and he performed an arthroscopy on me in april. I've had other surgeries before this and he was by far and away the best. Pays great attention to detail, very thorough and considered approach and most importantly (for me anyway) gives you all the time you need, before AND after surgery. I've seen him on about 5 or 6 different occasions now and no appointment has been less than 30 mins. I was also able to call him on his mobile a couple of times with specific concerns after surgery and he was always happy to talk.

He's based at the Yorkshire Clinic. He does private and some NHS work I believe.

Hope that helps expand your options.

I was not aware that Richard did NHS work. I think he is private only. Therefore I would not like to guess what it would cost at the Wellington Hospital, but I think you would be looking at inexcess of £10,000 all in.

I have heard he is the best hip person in England so it will probably be hard to get appointment but will be worth it in the long run

I'll second Calvins recommendation to see Mr Schilders. He has a long NHS waiting list , but I saw him initially privately at the Yorkshire Clinic and had an appointment within 3 weeks.
    Good luck

    Thanks very much

I'll look into him. To be honest I'd happily travel the length and breadth of the country if at the other end I get my hips fixed!

Out of interest how have people fared with the NHS? My GP basically said that if I could bare it I should go privately so a) somebody who was an expert read the MRI and b) the wait would be much quicker. I'm uninsured so financially it is quite daunting but maybe it is worth it?
