Fifth metatarsal stress fracture

One of the most feared stress fractures is to the 5th metatarsal bone, on the outside of the foot. This bone stress fractures at its base which is about halfway down the outer border of the foot.

When treated with standard measures (e.g. rest from running activities) 5th metatarsal stress fractures have a notoriously low rate of healing. Even when operated on, there is a significant failure rate.

Some of the famous football players who have struggled with this stress fracture in previous years include Robbie O'Davis and Darren Albert of the Newcastle Knights (both who had multiple recurrences of this fracture). In the AFL, Anthony Jones also had a very slow healing version of this stress fracture when playing with the Fremantle Dockers. This was somewhat ironic, as 5th metatarsal fractures are sometimes called 'Jones fractures', named after Sir Robert Jones, who described his own 5th metatarsal fracture in the Annals of Surgery in 1902.
