Navicular stress fractures are the most feared of all stress fractures in running athletes. The navicular is a small bone at the top of the arch of the foot. It has a poor reputation for healing, partially due to poor blood supply and partially due to mechanical load.
James Hird of Essendon almost had his career ended by a recurrent navicular stress fracture. Emma George , the former women's world record holder in the pole vault, had her career curtailed by this injury.
