Ankle posterior impingement is very common in sports where the ankle is placed in full plantar (downwards) flexion. Ballet dancers, fast bowlers in cricket and footballers who regularly kick can suffer this injury.
Often the impingement is caused by an extra bone called an os trigonum . Treatment can be with a cortisone injection and/or surgery to remove the bone.
Australian fast bowlers Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee have recently both had surgery to correct posterior impingement of the ankle. Andrew Flintoff continues to struggle with the injury after multiple surgery attempts. He is again attempting a return to international cricket this 2008 season
