Syndesmosis sprains, sometimes called 'high ankle sprains' affect the ligament between the two shin bones (tibia and fibula). They are difficult to diagnose because there is very little swelling or tenderness. Often they are suspected by doctors because what seems to be a simple ankle injury takes far longer to recover than expected.
Grade 1-2 syndesmosis sprains will keep a player out of football for 4-8 weeks. Grade 3 syndesmosis sprains can sometimes require surgical fixation to pin the two bones together. The recovery period for these injuries is 4-5 months. Trent Barrett of St. George is the most famous recent player to suffer this injury.
