The hip cartilage consists of two varieties: lining or articular cartilage (which covers the bone) and the cartilage labrum (which is the rim of the hip joint that widens the socket). The articular cartilage wears if it is damaged, and there is unfortunately very little that can be done to treat this. If it is severe wear, it will eventually lead to hip arthritis.
The hip labrum can tear and if this occurs without any articular cartilage wear, then it can be treated with a hip arthroscope.
