Facial lacerations are common but generally not serious injuries in football.
The most contentious issue regarding facial lacerations is whether infectious diseases, such as HIV and the various forms of Hepatitis can be transferred through blood-to-blood contact on the field. One case has been reported in the medical literature, although current medical opinion is that such an occurrence would be extremely rare.
