Spinal canal stenosis
Spinal canal stenosis was until recent times a medical condition that was not heard of by the general public. It is a narrowing of the spinal canal that can predispose to a greater likelihood of spinal cord injury when a major neck injury (such as a fracture) occurs.
When spinal canal stenosis is causing neck pain, it is obvious that a player should have this treated (usually surgically) and he may be forced to consider retirement.
It is quite controversial as to whether spinal canal stenosis in a player with no symptoms should be treated or ignored. This issue was raised by the AFL in the 2002 pre-season, when they forced Chris Grant of the Western Bulldogs to sit out of football whilst the insurance issue was examined. Ultimately he returned to play with no further incident.
