Knee arthritis
Knee arthritis is a very common problem in retired football players, although in its early stages it can even occur during the mid-twenties.
Most players with the early signs of degenerative knee conditions can continue to play but must limit their running training.
Modern surgery is excellent for treating advanced knee arthritis with a knee replacement, although the patient cannot run after a knee replacement. However, surgery is less successful for mild to moderate knee arthritis. Modern techniques, such as cartilage replacement, promise to improve the treatment of this condition in the future, but they are still semi-experimental operations.
