Knee Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) sprains

Medial ligament injuries of the knee are very common but often are not severe. Although the exact reasons are unknown, the human knee can function reasonably well without an intact medial ligament (as opposed to the anterior cruciate ligament).

The medial ligament is also known as the MCL (medial collateral ligament). The usual mechanism of injury is a blow to the outside of the knee.

The elbow also has an MCL, which doesn't tend to affect football players if it is injured, although it is a major injury in baseball pitchers.
