Sternoclavicular (S/C) joint sprains

An S/C joint sprain is very similar to its related joint the A/C joint which is situated at the opposite end of the collarbone.

Severe S/C joint injuries will usually keep a player out of football for a few weeks, with minor varieties compatible with ongoing play.

Occasionally a sternoclavicular dislocation can occur where the clavicle moves inwards and threatens the organs inside the chest (such as the lung). This can be a long-term injury, as suffered by Ryan Girdler of the Penrith Panthers in early 2003.
