Fifth Metatarsal Stress Fracture
One of the most feared stress fractures is that of the 5th metatarsal which is situated on the outside of the foot. Stress fractures of this bone usually occur at its base which is roughly halfway down the outer border of the foot. When treated conservatively with rest and immoblisation, 5th metatarsal stress fractures have a low rate of healing and may sometimes require surgical fixation for complete healing.
Some of the famous football players who have struggled with this stress fracture in previous years include Robbie O'Davis and Darren Albert of the Newcastle Knights (both who had multiple recurrences of this fracture). In the AFL, Anthony Jones suffered a 5th metatarsal stress fracture when playing with the Fremantle Dockers.
