Calf strains

There are three calf muscles at the back of the lower leg: medial gastrocnemius, lateral gastrocnemius and soleus (which lies deep to the two gastroc muscles).

The calf is primarily responsible for creating power early in running, walking or sprinting (acceleration phase). Because of this, calf strains occur most commonly in a 'take-off' or 'push-off' movement.

Steve Waugh pulled a calf muscle during the 2001 Ashes series tour. Matthew Pavlich of the Fremantle Dockers sustained a calf strain in Round 22 of the 2011 AFL Season. Mark Gasnier of the St George Illawarra Dragons sustained a calf injury in 2011. He missed City v Country but went on to play State of Origin that year.
