Although 'shin splints' is a blanket term describing shin pain, it usually refers to a condition known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome. This occurs when there is overload to the inside border of the shin bone from excessive running. Treatment for this condition can include activity modification, reduction in running, ice, massage and biomechanical correction (change in footwear or orthotics). It is generally considered that medial tibial stress syndrome will become tibial stress fractures
if adequate rest is not undertaken.
